Comments: If this is the big gully mentioned in Rossiter's guidebook, I remember it being to the right of Twofers (looking up at the wall), and to the left of The Big Split.

Comments: You're right Chris. I goofed. MP didn't have this route posted at first. Now I added it thanks to the Western Sloper guide to Rifle. It is listed as a route called The Perfect Gun (5.12d).

Comments: Awesome shot! What a cool story to go with it. I love bears. That would be wild to have one at the base of a climb. A friend I know was out scouting for caves got chased up a tree. The bear climbed the tree and bit him in the ass one time. He had to go get stitches after that. Your lucky you were on your route at the time, and also had your pack up higher than where he could get to it.

Comments: I think that some of that mess is from bullet holes, because I saw shells, and un-used bullets in the sand/dirt below the route. There was this kind of markings on other rocks too where I believe people were shooting a 22. I was a little worried about using the anchors because of the cord tied to the hangers then through rings. The cord looked like it was in good shape around the hangers so that gave me confidence. After I saw that I wasn't going to bounce on it or do anything wild when rapping ... more >>

Comments: I believe this is a newer climb that wasn't printed in Peter Hubbel's "Golden Cliffs" guide. I hear there will be updated guide book coming this spring. The first bolt over the bulge is the crux; the rest of the climb has good holds, and feet.
I noticed that the hangers on the anchors are a little bit loose. One of the other photos on this page shows that they have the top-rope setup with the anchors backed up. I am not sure what their motivation was, but maybe somebody who knows abo... more >>

Comments: Just for the record Deliverance was not filmed in West Virginia and has nothing to do with West Virgina. According to the plot it was filmed along the fictional "Cahulawassee river" which was actually on the Chattooga River in Georgia. Never-the-less great write up Ladd.
Description: "Due to rainy weather, crazy locals, a depressed economy, and Deliverance most climbers don't ever consider West Virginia much of a climbing destination. However, West Virginia has some of the best climbing on the... more >>

Comments: ..or hang a bear bag over a cliff and temp him/her to throw their life away for the hanging bag of food/treats. That is what I used to do in WVA. I would never want to harm a bear, but it works. also vodka and lemons count as food, don't bring into your tent unless you want a bear to give you a wake up call at 4:30 AM.
