Comments: Whoa there, Tex...there are plenty of routes in CCC that might not feel like an overbolted outdoor gym. To stereotype it as such is a bit inaccurate.

Location: AZ : Northern Arizona : Oak Creek Canyon : Pumphouse Wash : The Ultimates/Mexican Pocke... : Ultimate Dihedral (5.10+)

Comments: I cleaned up the direct start of Ultimate Dihedral, and Casey Niggemyer got the likely FA of this variation this weekend (see picture)! This should become the standard route, avoiding the mossy slab with half driven pins.

Beta: Boulder up the overhanging left-facing corner to a jug. A pair of micro-cams (purple/grey metolius or equivalent) and #0.5 C4 a bit higher will protect the moves establishing in the pod and join the rest of the Ultimate right-facing dihedral. The overall grade stil... more >>

Comments: certainly a standard setting modern classic.

Personally I think the pitch ratings are more like:
10c, 10a, 11a, 11c, 6, 10(weird), 10+(sandy), 12b, 10d.

a few more notes on the raps. I counted 7 raps, with the first and last one being with one rope, and the others with two. this worked out perfectly.

RAP 1: Top(P9)-P8 ~80'
RAP 2: P8- P7* ~105' this rap station is located up and right from P7 anchors. Even though it is well camoed, you can take note of it from the P7 ledge if you look just pa... more >>

Comments: excellent work by the FA party, though I am not surprised. The first half of P1 is thoughtful yet secure face climbing followed by a nice rest. Then get ready for two subtle and techy cruxes separated by another rest. Incredible pitch. 11 bolts.

For pitch 2, don't be tempted to burn your big cams (#3 and #4) too early, though there is a sweet spot for a #5 at the beginning. For the rest of this pitch you only need a few pieces up to #.75 C4, doubles in 1s, 2s, and 3s, an... more >>

Comments: Approach is pretty easy from chicken point. Vehicle permitting, drive the broken arrow trail to chicken point and park. Park away from where the pink jeeps congregate. A trail roughly leads towards trundlers club buttress. Takes maybe 15-20min.

Comments: ah. you caught the West Fork bug...

you can access GoW as you would for Engagement, except you would take the gully at the base of the wall instead of going up the hill... it starts off nice from near the other side of the creek, but gets pretty gnarly higher up. The first pitch is a fairly dirty looking chimney that Paul D. claims is 'not as bad as it looks' ;)

also, keep in mind that West Fork/Call o Canyon is in Wilderness area, so all bolts need to be placed by hand...

Comments: This looks like the amphitheater of sorts that is up and behind the Creekside/Solid Gold area, and it is a cool spot to hang out. When I explored up there, I definitely noted good potential for new routes. Short, steep ones above the sun deck and some longer moderate ones that you pass as you traverse into this 'stoked bowl'.

The approach listed above is good, and what I eventually descended with, as I would NOT recommend the more direct gully approach from below (likely the same approach Rich... more >>
