Comments: Or from my POV get an alpine start (summit by 8 or 9am) and get back before they kick in.

Comments: Good advice Nick. That's what I did last time I was visiting - once I got to the top I pulled the rope and dropped the end down for the second to use, and just flicked it around the arete as prgress was made.

Comments: I agree with you Phil. I've done both quite a few times and much prefer the scramble to the notch, especially if I have a newbie with me.

Comments: Phil you missed the best part of the climb! A lot of why I rate climbs as classic is the way they make me feel. For this climb I just remember leading up a really blank section heading for what looked like a good pocket (the crux I suppose), praying that I wouldn't slide off, making the pocket only to realize that it wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped, then after feeling some level of relief, realizing that it wasn't over and I had to engineer some kind of step up into the pocket, well it goes on... more >>

Comments: Thanks Chris A, maybe I should've used the old basic programming method of leaving vacant numbers?

Comments: I've been going to the Sierra for 30 years and i can honestly say I had only one bear problem trip; it was a trip to Charlotte Dome. A small cinnamon bear bugged us twice in the night, shimmying up the tree where we had hung our food and we had to resort to throwing rocks at it, upon which it came right back down the tree, came at 9 then 12. The next day after the climb of the South Face we heard a large branch snap near our camp in the woods, ran into camp to see a huge black bear sta... more >>

Comments: There's no one there. When I climbed The Grand back 1992 that ledge was plastered with people, giving my partner Fred and I the incentive to storm up the Owen-Spalding Route asap. When we got to the summit there was no one there at all, if fact we only saw 1 other person that day and gave them a ride down our rap line back to Upper Saddle.

Comments: Lots of nice campsites southwest of Long Lake towards Margaret Lake, away from the Bishop Pass crowds. Also in a good heavy snow year the cornice on the east ridge of Goode gets to be huge.

Comments: Wow - I remember when it was full like this, now it's a very sad sight and closed to boats for 2014 due to drought conditions.

Comments: Sorry to add to the debate - but I think the guidebook comment from Jeff needs a counterpoint. First let me say that I met Jeff back in the late 80's at the PB, at the Dog Wall when it was open. So obviously Jeff has been a long-suffering and serving and much valued contributor to climbing in the area. His opinions should be heard and respected.

Guidebooks are tricky, and whether to produce a guidebook for an area has been a topic of debate which stretches back deep into the beginnings of the s... more >>

Comments: Good directions John.

Took my Subaru Outback up this road once to the trailhead, got a few bangs on the bottom, came down a lot better because I could crawl with the brakes on, whereas I had to rev the poor sucker to get it up the steep windy section and didn't have a lot of precision - didn't hit bottom once on the way back. Noticed a few rocker and exhaust dings at the trailhead. On the way home I thought the hood was open but alas it wasn't; I had twisted the front subframe by abou... more >>

Comments: Looks like a new bolt, before the original first bolt, has been placed (somewhat poorly) and summarily chopped. I don't remember seeing this before.

Comments: While it does seem like a next logical step to doing the 5.8 and 5.7 to the right be warned, the holds are significantly smaller, and may surprise you.

A very fine face climb, with lovely holds and moves.
