Comments: ALT. APPROACH BETA:

From the turnoff from the highway, go 0.7 miles up the dirt road to a pullout on the left with a boulder and a gravel pile. Park here. There is a road with a cable across it, don't block the road. Walk across the cable and immediately take a left on a singletrack trail that starts off up a rock band. Follow this until it becomes a double track, then at the end of the double track it becomes a single track again. Follow this down the the base of the "right side" climbs. This... more >>

Comments: An unknown party bolted most of this route except for the first few bolts. After years of sitting idle and unfinished, Jay Smith stepped up and finished it. Thanks. Jay. The name is a joke, not sure what to call it....

Comments: Ozman, you're thinking of the Sandman Wall on Jabba Buttress. The Solarium is a few hundred feet to the right, all slab climbs.

Comments: The sign at the parking lot was recently vandalized by some a-hole with a sharpie. "Leave your dog at home" was written all over the sign. It's really a shame to see such a malicious act by a fellow climber. Dogs ARE allowed at East Animas. Local climbers spent lots of time and money, with the help of the Access Fund, La Plata County, USFS, and Trails 2000, to provide a parking lot with a nice sign, as well as easements for a trail for climbers and their DOGS to use. Sorry you had a bad dog at c... more >>

Comments: You're probably right about the impact issue. And I do apologize for being rude. I just tend to wrestle with the issue of bolting in public places where there's lots of people, because I've bolted in such places and it's... interesting. But I think you've defended yourself quite well, and it's obvious that you're quite fond of these areas, so I say BOLT ON!

Comments: Matthias, I didn't mean to get on your case so hard. I realize that these routes probably give you great joy to climb. But, I see rock as a resource and, in my opinion, only certain spots should be bolted. Maybe some of these outcroppings should be left as toprope problems. Bolting forever changes the landscape, and it is a bolter's obligation to weigh the appropriateness of his endeavors. The fact that this cliff and others are within close eyesight of the Colorado Trail is reason enough to kee... more >>
