Comments: "Fake Mexican Hat"?

WTF? The idiotors, whoops, editors, of Mtn Project are flipping high. Why does that stand?

Paul's right: FA of the tower; Cameron Burns with Paul Fehlau as rope anchor. January 18, 1990. Paul and I were out staying at Warren Harding's place in Moab (yep, the same guy who did the first ascent of the Nose). It was the shittiest weather ever. Snowing every day. Warren would keep us up until 2 or 3 am every night telling stories (some of the recordings of these will b... more >>

Comments: Jason Halladay probably replaced the old gear. He's been a hero in terms of getting White Rock really equipped.

Comments: Luke, I remember doing that bolted route with you, but I thought Jon was with us (and others). That route, also on bullet-hard rock, was really good if memory serves....like mid-5.10 or something, right?

Comments: ...was just chatting with Luke at dinner tonight about the renaming of this route way back when to "Sale at Mervyns." Mervyns is a high-quality purveyor of high-quality Chinese made crap. A department store, if you will. Or at least they were. On Earth Day 1989 or 1990 (can't remember which year), Mervyn's undertook a mass effort in which the firm hung little plastic bags filled with advertising junk on every door in Los Alamos (and likely most of northern NM). Mike, Paul, and I were headed out ... more >>

Comments: This is REALLY interesting. I drove up there with my aging geologist Dad today (8/18/13) and my wife and daughters and my mother. Dad has a PhD in geology (University of Tasmania, 1953 or so) so he's always stoked to look at rock. It was surprising to see all the route development there.

I'd climbed at the "traditional area," of course, with the LA Mountaineers in 1982----who hadn't?

Paul Fehlau and I later (1989) went up to the cobbled cliffs (the so-called "Sport Area") and top-roped a bunc... more >>

Comments: I gotta admit, I'm not sure I did the FA of this route (I would bet $100 those old guys---my pal Norbert included) probably climbed it years before. And I never named it except maybe as a joke in that 1991 piece in R&I on White Rock. I certainly never submitted it to MP. Anyway, the long look from being old is kinda fun....

Comments: This is pretty interesting. I remember top-roping this a few times then leading it on natural gear (in the late 1980s, if memory serves). Now it's been bolted? Egad! Oh well. Whatever. I thought it was a fun route. Named for the late Forest Fukushima, a truly gifted climber from Los Alamos, who was hit while riding his bike and died. I remember being in Boulder in, I think, fall 1984, when I heard Forest had passed. His father, Eiichi, was on the first ascent of Vinson in Antarctica in 1966 (I t... more >>

Comments: We first climbed The Pickle as a joke. In 1987, we were sitting in the trailer that Eric Bjornstad and [rockshop owner] Lin Ottinger shared, and Lin said, "You should climb that thing that looks like a big dick out near Arches." So we did. "Hey, Lin, we did the big dick." "Good," he said. Later, he told us about Chimney Rock----the one in Canyonlands, as it hadn't quite or had just recently been climbed (by Kyle C.). Before the first ascent, Lin, guiding a tour, flew over Chimney Rock and threw ... more >>

Comments: Paul, I know. I suspect that it likely was (off limits) back then and that ranger I asked didn't know either way. I suspect she would never have dreamed we'd go back up the road and climb it. Oh well, hindsight is 20-20, right?
