My man Brent about to do the 100' rappel into the gully next to the "Tuna and Chips" wall at Red Rocks. Here, he is 'on rappel' with a prusik back up (below the device) and he's still tied into to the bolts with a double runner through an auto locking carabiner to his harness. That runner will not be removed until he's double and triple checked the entire system before he descends the rope. A bit of techy stuff there for ya. This guy's a natural, in four months he's gone from complete newbie on this very climb to actually doing his first real trad lead on that same climb yesterday. Yosemite here we come in 2010!

When I try to explain rock climbing to non climbers I always get the same questions and comments; “You’re insane, that what Tom Cruise did, you must have a death wish” etc.

Nothing could be farther from the truth of course.
I could drone on for hours about what I personally get from rock climbing but this image sums it up much better; about 250 feet above the car and with the cell phone turned off, I’m sitting out in the warm sunshine of a late November afternoon enjoying a snack without a care in the world.

This is why I rock climb. It’s not about cheating death or any other macho bullshit, it’s about getting out of the house and enjoying some fresh air, and that’s it.

Your experience may differ.

Welcome to your public lands, now go outside!

10 frame HDR from the Powershot running chdk

Looking down at Gary M on the top of pitch one, a rather small and uncomfortable stance, this would suck for a party of three.

Comments: I added some chains to the top of the second pitch which is the rap down into the Aruba Wall gully. This is a great beginners area because you can lead 5.3 to get to the P1 bolts which then can TR some harder stuff underneath. Or you can do the second pitch (5.1) and rap the gully mentioned above with a single rope. Also at the top of P2 is a great lunch spot/parking lot to let your beginners get totally hooked on RR.

Comments: We found a fun variation to the left of the crack on the black varnished face after the initial start. Thin crimpers and delicate foot work needed. Guessing 5.8 avoiding the middle crack altogether. Watch that loose block up there.

Comments: Thanks Larry, I realize this probably should have been posted in the forums. I'm gonna go back up there soon and nail that slab. It just seemed like the 'right' way to go off of the belay at the time. Live and learn. 5.9, not 5.6, LOL.

Comments: I have a question about the slab on the start of P3. That sure didn't feel like 5.6 (to my fat ass anyway) I went about half way and fell on my pro, then traversed out to the right and went up that way on much easier terrain. Clipped the bolt from above/right. Can anyone comment on these moves? Are they really .6 or more like .9 (in the dihederal on the left of the slab)? Man I love friction but that freaked me out for some reason.
