Comments: Easy, but Wild -- a very memorable Alpine Route that 5.7 is. I assume that's what you were getting ready to head up here, back in the day?

Comments: Followed this fine route this afternoon. While I will say that it is physically and mentally demanding (on lead), with all due respect, I do not think that it is sandbagged. That said, this is not a "Beginner's 10a". I am 5'11" and did not have any serious reach issues through the crux. Leaving the helmet on the ground will help w/ placing gear high at the crux and maneuvering. It's a bit wonky (in a Fun way!), and a little uncharacteristic of Lumpy, but if you've done some roofs before, or clim... more >>

Comments: Thank you SO much for posting this John! As a former NASA employee, and very recent AAC member who hasn't used his AAC resources, it's good to know I can still count on the MP community =)

Comments: This picture is awesome Greg - thanks for sharing!

...however, I do not think the description matches the Topo I am looking at in Rossiter's 96 guidebook. You can barely see the far right side of the "Bookend" on the far left side of this photo ("Orange Julius" area).

The main crags in the center of the photo from left to right are: "Left Book" (far left), "Bookmark", "Bookmark Pinnacle" (bottom center - zoom in to see how it's in the foreground), "Isis Buttress" (the buttress in the center o... more >>

Comments: Chris: 1st, this routes look fun - Thanks for posting!

2nd, in your description you mention the "Dead Elk Couloir". Is this the same as the "Dragon's Tooth Couloir"? There appears to be about 4 different names for the couloir that ascends between the Dragon's Tail Rock Buttress and the Dragon's Tooth Rock Buttress. Other names I've heard are "Dragon's Egg Couloir" and "Tower Gully". There must be some kind of magical curse in this area that has warped out minds... But my question is, do you kno... more >>

Comments: Ah Yeah. Nice Vert. What is that? Stalefish? No, wait, just give me a second here. Method? No. Shit. Okay, I confess. I use to street skate, and I was scared of Vert, so I don't know my "air jargon". Help a nostalgic brother out. Damnit, what is that? FS nose grab w/ your back hand?

Comments: Climbed this Today (5/20/09). The night before, temps had barely dropped below freezing, and the skies were partly cloudy: not ideal. There is some alternating soft/hard snow and running water in a handful of places and the ice (3 bulges) is either delaminating or turning into "snice" - don't bother bringing screws. That said, it was really quite Fun!

Ratings: I would call this AI3 instead of WI2+ given the nature of the "ice".

With the WX forecast of rain/snow and temps dropping below freezin... more >>

Comments: This is the first route at Lumpy Ridge where Rossiter's 1996 description and topo did not seem to make sense. He gave this route a "star", but I give it the "finger".

We climbed P1 but could not locate the 2 bolts that were suppose to be there for P2. We saw a bolt 20 ft. to our left for "Milk Run (7 vs)", and a bolt 25 ft. up and to our right, which we assume is for "Hair Lip" (11c).

Maybe we were just blind, but I was not stoked to get up there expecting 5.9 bolt moves only to have these 3 o... more >>

Comments: Thurs 13 Nov 08: West Gully was "lean" (not to be confused w/ thin) IMHO, as this climb is usually FAT. Anyhow, it was definitely climbable, but the left half of the 1st pitch had zero ice on it. My partner and I only climbed P1 & P2 as we had no interest in adding time to our descent in lieu of the ~WI2 upper slabs. P2 can be done at ~WI3 on the left currently w/ a WI4 variation in the middle/right.

The temps were rather warm for that altitude this time of year as some of the ice at the base w... more >>

Comments: Nice picture Ross. Would you mind sharing where you took this from? I've been trying to get info on when this route forms up. The ice on the left in this picture does not seem to match the route description though. That looks like some "Unknown" line left of "Snow Bench". Odd. The ice on the right side looks like "Right Gully". Cheers!

Comments: Attempted Notch Couloir on 8 June 08. Got a late start, but Lamb's Slide was still quite solid from 8am-9am when I was ascending it. There were parts that were easy kick stepping up to the calf/knee w/ other sections that were super solid where kicking hard only created a 6in. hole. The Snow on the first 1/3 of Broadway also felt solid, but I can not speak for "safety". It began to "gropple" and snow ~1 in/hr from ~10-11am, and ball-bearings were running down the face so I bailed. I was amazed b... more >>

Comments: Jaws was in good shape today. It was very cold (teens or less?) and overcast all day, which kept the ice solid. The only real drips were between the two large pillars, and they were minimal. There are 4 potential lines. We did the far left (easiest at ~WI4-, protects well) and it was good. To the right of that is a ~WI4+ line that is hollow sounding and probably scary on lead. To the right of that is a WI5 column that looks like it might crash down from delamination. Further (far) right is a ~WI... more >>

Comments: A cordelette and/or long slings are great for slinging around the ice pillars on this route. There is only one rap ring on the slings up there though --- it might be good to bring a back-up biner/ring. Other than that, it looks like you could actually keep climbing another short vertical section up and left of the tree and then rap off of the Crystal Meth (aka Lochness Monster?) anchor up higher.
