Comments: So after being asked it I had done the FA of Rage I thought I'd check to see. This doesn't clear it up at all. I'm pretty sure in retrospect that I did the FA of the Direct Rage. I wouldn't put much stock in my memory, however.

Comments: Good question. I don't remember, to be honest. Rage to Live, right? Didn't Craig Smith put that up? I think I climbed it, though. If that's what I'm thinking about with the two starts then I have no recollection of LiY was like. It's all a blur, really. We were all pushing ourselves and had people like Craig and Lynn Hill and Todd Skinner going out with us and encouraging our efforts. It seems like every day was starting, working on, or finishing another FA. Heady times.

Comments: Glad you liked the route. I think I remember two starts to that route, direct and a traverse of some kind, right? How are you guys starting? As I look back, I only remember doing the direct, probably because of the effort put forth, but seem to recall the traverse being a little more interesting. Or was is just more contrived? It's been so long. I need to make a trip back to revisit the days of grind and glory ...

Comments: Eric and I had a vision for this route long before rap-bolting was practiced in North America. The distance between protection points was due to our own uncertainties about rap-bolting. We thought if we were going to place bolts on rappel, and not on hooks as was common then, we had better leave lots of space between them.

One early guidebook entry describes our ascent as a “siege.” I would hardly call what we did as a siege. After bolting the route, Eric tried the first attempt. Remember, thi... more >>

Comments: Funny how age hasn't made me any smarter. Sorry, I get it now. I'll have to consult with the 1st ascent team before i post the route. As a matter of fact, why hasn't John done that?

I do remember someone crying on that route, Paul. When you say you were somewhere in the area, you mean you were hopping up and down trying to see over the brush as I climbed the route, right? It is okay to make fun of the vertically challenged? And where did you get 6'6"? Although, I suppose everyone over 5'8" must... more >>

Comments: Not done Pegasus? I'm pretty sure I remember doing that one. Little roof ... little pro ... It's the route Steiger put up, isn't it? I think I did the 3rd or 4th ascent -- maybe the first person to do it without a fall? Who would want to fall on that route!? I remember quite an audience. John Steiger belayed me. I remember telling him I was going to solo up to the start (didn't Pegasus share the first pitch?) and he was going to walk around to a ledge system with all the gear. As I approached th... more >>

Comments: There is nothing anyone can say that I don't deserve. It's all good laughs, in the end.

Sorry, I can't remember who belayed me (I was notorious for corrupting young climbers and imposing belay-slave duties on them). If I remember rightly, Jason Mullins and Moema Clark were with me the day I pointed the route.

No idea on the date. Last century, though. Man, it's scary to be able to say that ... and even scarier to feel it! You understand :)

Comments: Parsifal Bradley Allen Smith-Hill ... It's a family curse. Understand why I used Brad for so long?

My daughter's name is Ryanne Connie Smith-Simonsen. I tried desperately to convince my wife to call her RC Smith. No luck ...

Comments: Pegasus! I was wracking my brain to remember this route. Absolutely brilliant! Why is it not listed?

Comments: This route is really called Aurora Blues. I established the route and finished with lowering anchors at the point where the good climbing stopped. Chris climbed a crumbly, ledgy, and downright ugly additional 20 ft that I felt distracted from the quality of the climb. The otherwise flawless guidebook author felt that Chris' contribution of garbage to an otherwise nice little climb warranted a re-naming of my route. I disagree. I suggest you do Aurora Blues and forget the cake-w... more >>

Comments: Steve won't find out for years. We're all using i-pads and I bet he's got a printing press :)

Some of my students dug up the pics on this site and showed me. I thought I'd better join and defend my tarnished reputation! Then I remembered what a jerk I was and realized any defense would be untenable.

I have indeed found that going with gravity is better at our age than fighting gravity. I race downhill mountain bikes now.

Comments: I'm surprised people still talk about these routes. Someone should bolt it up and make it fun (you have my blessing).

Comments: A guy stops climbing and look at what they say about him ... It's Parsifal, actually.
