Comments: I just did this route again after many years. Like many Gunks routes the rating should be according to height. The Gunks is full of horizontals and if you can reach the next horizontal jug it may feel like 5.7 but it you can't it may feel like 5.10.

So this is an approximation of the rating based on height, according to me, your mileage may vary.
6.2 ft 5.7
5.10 ft 5.8
5.6 ft 5.9
5.2 ft 5.10

Comments: Thanks. That's the route. It didn't feel that hard but after all the crimpy climbs I did it might have just felt easier.

Comments: Yeah even the WMCC identifies the climb by name. The group guarding the secret. It seems a bit hypocritical.

Comments: LOL...posting the photo and the grade of the route is okay, but posting the name might make it easier to find? Or people won't climb it if they don't know the route's name? Illogical.

Comments: There are a million shots from this vantage point and this is one of the best I've seen. Makes me want to climb it at sunset.

Comments: It looks like a juvenile rat snake. Google juvenile rat snake and click "Images."
There are lots of full grown (black) rat snakes at Rattlesnake.

Comments: You don't need two ropes to get down. One 60m and two raps.

Comments: There is a new route on the far right side of the cliff. Tan bolt hangers on the easy side. Anyone know what it is named and rated?

Comments: An ice climbing area only. No worthwhile rock climbing. Very loose with danger of falling rocks.

Comments: Usually photos are tilted to make them look steeper. This one is actually steeper than it appears in the photo. If you adjust the horizon to be horizontal it will show the true steepness. Nice photo though with the clouds. I love that climb.

Comments: You may want to only do this in early winter conditions. I saw a huge slab avalanche go down this gully. It is an avalanche chute once the snow builds.

Comments: Yeah, I would call it 5.7ish but I'm constantly accused of sandbagging grades. Most people call the face 5.8. Probably height dependent.

Comments: Chris,

I was there the other day and climbed the route again to make sure I know what I'm talking about. If you fall anywhere from a body length above the first piece to the second piece 30 feet above you are going to hit the ground which is covered in rocks. If you survived, you would probably be spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair sucking your dinner through a straw. That is the definition of an X rated climb. Here is a photo of the climb. It is not too clear but you can see the... more >>

Comments: This is not on the Party Wall. This is the Party Wall: mountainproject.com/v/party-wa...

This is not PG-13. You have the potential for a long (30 foot?) fall between the first and second piece of gear and will deck. It is a free solo on gear and at least an "R" and probably an "X" should you fall before getting to where you can place the second piece of pro.

I saw Nichols lead this many many years ago (around 2000) when we were teaching an AMC class at the cliff. He ski... more >>

Comments: Dave Fasulo and I looked closely at the flake in the middle of the big roof on the Party Wall and determined that we couldn't even aid it due to the lack of any crack whatsoever. There are some big roofs on the North End that would probably go if you are into hand jamming cracks while dangling.
