The namesake stuck nut lifted out easily by hand in Oct 2013, 2 1/2 years after it was "irretrievably" placed. I remember using unholy means to try to get it out back then. Today, easy as pie - an undoubted testament to the freeze-thaw cycle.

Showing some alternatives for P2:

One can skip the initial bolts by starting deeper in the chimney and enduring a little more run-out. With back to bolted side and deeper in it, this initial part is much easier than 5.8+.

Also shown is the alternative of continuing up the remainder of the chimney and finally emerging not far below the last bolt of the pitch - it's a #4 big bro way up there.

A question about the route Poontang, regarding the protection on pitch 2:

I'm guessing the bolts marked here are for the end of P2 of Poontang after the last traverse to the left. Poontang is 5.10, grade III in Hill's guide. These bolts are about 30 feet right of the bolts at the back of a huge ledge (end of pitch 2 for both Water Stains & Cave Route).

For Poontang, Hill's guide states "Several small pitons might be reassuring on the second pitch." Anyone know whether that is still the case?

I believe this is actually the original way the first couple pitches go based on Mike Hill's guide: "... a short gully up and left ...."; description of Poontang in Hill's 3rd Ed.; plus the topo on page 137 showing how to start Water Stains and Poontang.

The pitch between the two shown belays is a very nice 35 meter stretch.

Route 6 is marked (roughly) by red dots - variations are possible for the first couple of pitches that gets one to the "cave". For reference, Standard S Route is marked by white dots (roughly).
