Comments: This was originally listed NOT as a first ascent, and someone talked me into putting it on. I think that I'm going to agree with you, and it is now no longer listed as a first ascent.

Comments: Well, it took me more than a month, but I'm finally making headway with my map of Indian Rock. It's looking so neat I'm tempted to make ones of everywhere!

Comments: It is my opinion after having visited Indian Rock numberous times that the locals all seem to think that problems that they have dialed must therefore be easier. It is my understanding of the ratings system that once you have a climb dialed, it will become easier to YOU, but that doesn't change the rating. Also, if something was a V1 25 years ago, and 10 grips have fallen off of it or the grips have changed from a good corner to a rounded one, guess what? It's not a V1 anymore. Period.

Comments: I think the person above is thinking of the overhung roof problem that moves left. If you go straight up the overhung roof, this is a comitting balancy move 9 or so feet off the ground. I think it's a V4. leave a comment if you agree / disagree.

Comments: After climbing it, I think it's 5.7 if you are about 8, and have really really littlehands. Tall people will find this route harder than short poeple. There are tons ofhands and feet on this route, it's just that none of them are big.

Comments: For a 5.6 this route is a great workout, and it makes for an excellent warmup prior to bouldering or top-roping. This is a great 5.6 route. Period.

Brian mentioned a long sling for this route, I think 25' will suffice.

Comments: You're pretty much done once you get to the first bolt, so stick clip this bolt to avoid groudnfall, or just don't fall until you're clipped. The runway for a long fall is pretty good, but make sure that your belayer is ready to catch you.

This is not a good route to have someone who believes in drinking, smoking and lead belaying simultaneously belaying you.

Comments: The initial crack section of this route is a great overhanging workout.

Lotsa work for a 5.10d!

Comments:

The 8th and 12th bolts need redrilling, as they are both quite loose.

Comments: This was a great warmup, not too tough, not too easy.

Pick the right route for a 5.9.

The top anchors are definately getting thin, and I personally WOULD NOT top rope off of them.

Comments: Remember to stay on route, though it is tempting not to, as it's quite tough to figure out where to go after the third bolt.

Comments: And trust your grip, as the hands through this section consist of nothing more than the aretes, which are slightly rounded in the beginning.

Badass! Good luck finding these moves anywhere else.

Comments: I'd agree that this was a tough route for a 5.9. The traversy moves in the middle of the route were interesting, and it took some thought to figure out how to get from the first clip to the second.

Hold on for the first clip

Comments: The photos and hence spread I wanted to take got sidelined because someone stole my digital camera. I'm looking into a few alternative methods for getting pictures for the area, but none of them have panned out yet. It will happen!

Comments: The crux of this route was really fun, and I really like the rock of this climb, especially compared to all the other rock in Pine Canyon. This route takes all the balance required in not breaking the grips on other routes in Pine canyon, and actually forces you to do interesting moves.

What I didn't like about this climb is that the top anchor is way over the moss covered top slab. I think it should be bolow this, near the sketchy fifth bolt.

sketchymon. Too much moss on the top! The route ... more >>

Location: CA : San Francisco Bay : Mount Diablo State Park : Pine Canyon : Flintstone Rock : Pigeon Tunnel (5.8)
By: Aron Quiter When: Sep 9, 2002

Comments: Brian forgot to mention that the name of the route does indeed imply that the whole route is covered in pigeon shit. Never gotten so dirty on a climb before.

With the amount of sand that's falling from rope movement over your head, the amount of pidgeon crap that you're kicking off the rock, and the occasional updrafts going through the tunnel, you will get more than your daily oral intake of both sand and pigeon shit.

It's a long chimney though, so it does have that going for it!

Comments: I am not so tall at 5'9"... But this isn't even height dependent. This is a good 11d route for someone of my size, but the people that are 5'2" aren't going to be doing the same move as those over 6', not that they usually can on reachy routes. I don't think this was a chipped route, and was a fairly interesting and burney route for me.

Comments: There's 4 bolts, why is so much pro needed? It's only a 5.6! The runout part is a staircase, just don't climb it when it's wet out. This would be a great route for teaching people a trad for all the same reasons.

Comments: After the crux this is a little runout, but the section that's runout it only about 5.5, if that. I liked this climb, slabby roof sections that have a mini-Yosemite feeling to them.
