Comments: Dear Southern California climbers:

The Saturday after Thanksgiving I attempted to lead Calm after my brother Brian had already successfully reached the top. It was late in the day, and I was too exhausted to finish. I lowered off thinking that there would be an easy way to reach this top anchor from above, and Brian chimnyed up to the top of the route on the left side, but couldn't find an easy way to get to the top anchors.

So - I left 7 draws on the route, as we'd skipped a few of the bolt... more >>

Comments: I was just up there last week, I didn't see that, I saw what appeared to be a lone sling around a large chock stone. I climbed the second pitch instead of lowering, and wished I hadn't. Can you say rope drag?

Comments: No way was this chipped. There was probably some loose edges on top of the existing holes, which broke off during cleaning with hands on the first ascent, or with feet on the 10,000 sends this route has seen since. It's not a V1, but it is REALLY fun!

Comments: I think the final sentence shows Alan's contribution:
"Since this was done before the V-scale, consider the rating a humongous sandbag."

Comments: Michael: How can I improve this beta? I assume you're thinking my description of the first pitch is a little too vague, is this correct?

Comments: Great route - BRING THOSE CAMS! I hadn't read this, and summit's bay area top-ropes doesn't mention it. The final moves were dirty, and I wasn't very pleased to find myself without any pro moving to the last bolt. You'll deck from the upper ledge on the final 5.9ish move getting to the last bolt, and this is a good 70' up.

Comments: 1) The first nut is loose, I hand tightened it before clipping it, but didn't have a wrench with me. Hopefully someone can re-tighten this?

2) As I pulled into the top section of this route, I was unclear as to whether the route went left out onto the face or right up just to the left of the arete. I went left into the face... The last bolt is rotting, and really needs to be either removed entirely or replaced. Heads up!

Comments: I've setup top ropes on many of these climbs... That said it's SCARY, and by no means "safe". You can rappel from the observation tower to setup top anchors for most of the routes on the main wall if you're creative.

For the other comment from Hein - yes, you can still climb here, but the access to the rocks now comes from a prominent pullout .4 miles past the old parking lot (which you'll see is very closed.) on the West side of the road. I asked a ranger at the campground about what the d... more >>

Comments: Hard and height dependant. I couldn't pull the crux, though Jared (who's 6 inches taller than I) could with considerable difficulty.

Comments: I went back here a few weeks ago for the first time in several years, and it seems to me like someone has DRASTICALLY improved the landing under this problem. what used to be a fall into some nasty rocks and stumps is now nicely landscaped and bark nuggeted just like the rest of the lower area at Indian Rock.

Comments: I was there about a month ago, and there were definitely several bolts up top. A larger 6' sling should be brought to equalize the anchor.

Comments: At 5'9", I didn't find the crux to be the balancy .11a move at the 4th (?) bolt. The crux for me was higher, at the second to last bolt, where I had to dyno to get to the holds before the final mantle. This was the hardest individual move I did all day, and we were on Nirvana (.12a) later on in the day.

Comments: Cracked my head on the pointy rock in Skullcracker yesterday, spotters are required for the roll out of a fall. That rock wins in the brain bucket vs. hard rock battle.

Comments: It's been 7 years since I climbed this, I still don't have a redpoint, and it still scares the hell out of me. The hard moves are protected well, but still no evidence of others on it recently.

Comments: I was going to jump on this route today, but realized rather quickly that there appears to be a beehive in a pocket somewhere between the first and second bolts. I don't know if this is a crucial hold, but I decided it wasn't worth my time to find out!

Comments: I'd agree about stick clipping the first bolt if you're not confident in the grade - the first one's a doozy...
