Comments: Polypodium californicum, California Polypody. Much of The Hideout is lush fern habitat.

Comments: 'The Frond' is the striking aréte. A belay can be constructed at its base, which is reached by following a trail up a sloping ramp.

Comments: Dev. Notes:
'Biome' was cleaned on rappel and then led from the start. It was done on gear as a serious, R rated lead.
A bolt has since been added up high to reduce the chance of ground fall, but it's still an exciting climb.

Comments: Dev. Notes:
The base was harder to reach when 'Fern Dust' was done, and I rapped the dirty groove adjacent to get to the start. Ergo, the ascent didn't earn ground-up stripes, but the fa went down first try without further notable tactics.

Comments: Dev. Notes:
This was the first climb done in the area, and was so scruffy it barely looked climbable. But its position above the meadow was great and the place in general picture perfect, and I would sometimes hike up and top rope it by myself. Eventually I was able to get others to come check it out and, after some cleaning and a handful of ascents, it started to look like a reasonable lead. There was even a cool boulder problem start directly beneath the ribs.
Since then it's been led a b... more >>

This scruffy line was done onsight, ground-up. The only real gear placed was a micro cam, low on the aréte.

Comments: Dev. Notes:
'The Frond' was done onsight, ground-up. Natural features allowed the route to go bolt-free.
It would've been easy to rap down the route, clean it, and then lead it. But with the route's striking aspect and the adventurous tradition of the area, a ground-up attempt was in order. Plus it's a short route, and I wanted to get the most out of it.
Opportunities for gear at the start were encouraging but prospects above were unknown. I had my drill on a tagline in case there wasn't ... more >>

'Silver Carpet' was completed onsight, ground-up. Drilling was done on lead, with removable bolts being used to protect the first ascent. The route has since been equipped with high quality stainless.

Comments: Silver Carpet climbs the tall face in the center of the photo. The start is hidden by the oaks, but the crux at the left-leaning seam is clearly visible.

Comments: I was pretty blown away when I arrived at the cliff this morning. A classic trad line, defiled.

Comments: This position is above the upper schist tier, a very airy place. I initially came here several months ago while scouting lines. It was this view of the cobblestone formation that first inspired me to put up the route.

Comments: It is always great to show up at the crag and see someone enjoying a route of mine. But when that person is Lynn Hill...well, needless to say it made my day. I was able to take some funky cell phone shots of her yesterday as she ran a tr lap on the first pitch.

Comments: The entire third pitch of Riparian Daydream is visible in this picture, including the crack that is found on that pitch. The Wheel is the crack splitting the right side block.

Comments: Dev. Notes:
Riparian Daydream was a solo project that began on August 25 when I first installed the topmost anchor and rappelled off. I fixed lines on the separate pitches to facilitate cleaning and bolting, and ran many laps up the wall via mini traxion. In late September I gave the route its first lead.

The name is a tribute to the magical creekside spaces along the various arms of the Matilija.

Comments: Dev. Notes:
Ripple Rider was done ground up, since it would have actually been more difficult to scramble around for a top down effort. The route looked like it might lend itself well to a ground up, free ascent. I 'stanced' it onsight, the route had never been rappelled or Tr'ed.
Use of removable bolts allowed for fine tuning of the final bolt placements, which was done on rappel after the FA.
