Comments: Someone please tell me they actually saw this broadcast. In SD it seems they prefer to show continuous man vs. food, regardless of what the travel channel online guide shows.

Comments: Ha! The Traffic Cop Rock. There used to be a sign at the bottom of it but it kept getting stolen. Great photos!

Comments: Since they've cleared the trees, the rock is easily visible, and road gawkers abound. "How did you get down there?!"

Comments: I think this is a great route. It is now well protected, with maybe 8-9 new SS bolts (Thanks Ron and the BHCC!). I used runners on each bolt and still got a little rope drag towards the top. I put some slings around the large horn on top to belay. There are also new rap anchors. A single 60M rope will get you to the ground.

Comments: Thanks, Andrew. The first bolt looks newer, but the two pitons are all you have up top.

Comments: The first pitch is fun, and as is written, use long runners for the "Z". When you 'tunnel in' you are presented with three options: a slightly overhanging handcrack (East), and puff-n-grunt off-width (middle), and an easy ramp (West). I chose the easy ramp, but it caused heinous rope drag. I slung the horn before the belay ledge, which gave my second the choice of the puff-n-grunt or the ramp. He chose the former. The belay ledge is nice and wide, with many slots for cams and nuts. There ... more >>

Comments: Brent et al.,

Is it possible for the BHCC to convince park rangers to take a day and remove the old, and currently bogus, "No Trespassing" signs? If there is one thing that is going to keep people from climbing, it's thinking they may be arrested or fined.

Comments: Based on the old piton we found on the 4-5 gully side of the crack, I would guess the Conn's might have started here. I was a follower on this route, and to lead it would have taken a lot of balls. The leader said he wouldn't lead it again. We rapped off the E. Face of South Tower, using the one good bolt, and the spinney black one (after replacing the slings, leaving a biner and an aluminum rap ring). A two 60m rope rappel brought us to the ground between the route start and 'Take a Left.' ... more >>

Comments: The friction on this climb is spooooky. There are other friction 5.6's in the Rushmore area, but Solo System is much longer and much steeper. One 60m rope worked for the climb and repel, with about 3m left on each tail. Enjoy!
