Comments: John Hayes was on the FA of the first pitch and I think Virgil Davis was with me on the second pitch. Pretty cool how exposed this climb is.

Comments: Rumor has it he needs a new rope too! Not really. Fun to be there when he got the drill. Just after he got the drill we made him drill up a new route he had envisioned. He then let another get the first ascent. Damn Hooligan.

Nice job kids.

Comments: You can link this to the top of No Brainer in a long second pitch. You will need a 70M rope to get down if you do the second pitch.

Comments: If those are big fat Metolius "pig ears" I am guessing you would see hammer marks all over the edges if they had been smashed flat. I looked at the before and after pictures and that was a huge block. It would be way easier to just unscrew the bolts and take the hangers. Wow that is terrifying to think someone could have been killed like a bug underfoot.

Comments: After looking at Stiegers description I am pretty sure the Grossman Variation is a little right of where it is marked on this topo. I could be wrong but that is my guess after climbing it today. Stieger also described the slanting crack as "bizarre" but it wasn't.

Comments: This crag is now a good place to go for the moderate team or group. You will have fun.

Comments: Did the Grossman Variation today and found it to be pretty reasonable in the run out sections. The 5.9 part was well protected. Jim thought there was some rock that was dubious on the run out section to the horizontal.

Comments: Pretty obvious I don't need one. You should have seen the rock. Crushed it. Haha. Climbed until dark and got another 400 feet in. I am putting one in my pack for situations like this. Jim had said an hour before "we really should have helmets for rock this bad".

Comments: Thank you ASCA! If you want to do something for your local climbing community, send them a check. It will help insure you have solid bolts to clip on the older routes.

Comments: I think they should issue airsoft guns to all visitors. This would be similar to the rangers who use beanbags or rubber bullets on bears. Teach them to fear us and they will at least not sit on the edge of my cereal bowl while I am eating dinner.

Comments: I hate these little buggers. They chewed a hole in my pack over there at Half Dome. I realize they are just trying to survive but when you have to lock everything including toothpaste in a safe it gets annoying.

Comments: Yes it was John. I think I did some before this one though. Hard to believe I have been doing new routes in AZ for 30 years. I started putting up routes in 77 when I was 18 in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Comments: These are good bolts. They have more than enough thread in the sleeve (not shown) to hold a huge fall. The negative is that if you don't get them tight they don't have to loosen up much to fall out. I never had one fall out. We placed a lot of these in the 80's. Just try getting the sleeve out.

Comments: First pitch is pretty easy for the most part and relative to pitches farther up the cliff. You will have to think about it though. I knew and it was cool to be climbing a route he did first. In places I knew he had used the same holds and I smiled all the way up the cliff. He was a great guy.

Comments: Border Patrol on Mt. Lemmon has the same issue. Fortunately the route grade doesn't change much if one stems behind them. Most people don't even notice the option and climb it without the stem.

Bouldering is a different animal as a lot of bouldering involves eliminates.

With routes I try not to dictate where people climb. You gave us the info so folks can do what they like. The rock gives us the holds be they where we want them or not. Sounds like a good route either way you do it.

Comments: Geir and I added a new slightly easier start to this route today. It is probably only two letter grades easier than the original start but I think I will use this as my warm-up from now on. It takes good gear up to a bolt then traverses right to the original route.

Comments: I will repeat myself. If this thing is PG-13 all climbs are PG-13. It is really fun and is a great first lead at the grade. Orifice Politics is PG-13 if this is your standard. You could mess up getting to the first bolt and tumble down the ramp. Just saying that you could get hurt on any climb if you fall off. People tweak ankles on short falls all the time.

I think this PG-13 thing is BS anyway. CLIMBING IS DANGEROUS. GRAVITY PLUS ROCK EQUAL SKINNED KNEE, ELBOW, BROKEN NAIL, ETC. DO NO... more >>
