Comments: Did this again yesterday after replacing the old mixed metal bolts and hangers with ASCA 1/2 inch stainless bolts and hangers. Tricky crux section and cool finish one of Kevin Carmichael's better redpoints. Crux feels a lot harder if you misread it on the first go.

Comments: That's great info Alex. It is amazing how sandbagged some of the older routes were. Those guys worked on the route the whole day and called it 11+. John Steiger could climb really hard stuff back in the day but as often happened didn't think he could climb that hard so he called it 11+. Thanks for posting up. I will raise the grade in the upcoming guide to 12-.

Comments: It is a fun route. It wasn't the elevation Austin. It is 12-. The down raters come out if they get it easier than the last 12- they did. I have done the down rating more times than I can count. Onsights often lead to a lower rating from me.

People forget about the fact that now they live in the gym during the week and are working hard routes all the time. When the first 11+ routes were done pull-ups push-ups and sit-ups were the training regimen. Go get on some older 11s and you will f... more >>

Comments: Went back today to redpoint this and replaced the old Hardware with ASCA Gear. This is a climb that keeps you focused but allows you to recover after the hard moves. Ryan and Duderina must have been breathing helium the day they got on it, or they might have gotten on another route, as 11c seems like such a bag to the four folks I know that have been on it lately. Or, as well as they are climbing it may have felt like 11c as climbs sometimes do.

Comments: If some 5.8 climber who has the vision to link R1 to R2 and feels strongly that it is worthy posts and names it R1 1/2 should we name it. What if I named and posted the 50 or so of these variations I have done. Where do we draw the line? Should we include sit down starts? What about a traverse into the start of Sentenced to Hang? Should we start doing eliminates on routes? If I eliminate the knee bars on Orifice Politics can I rename it Nasty Orifice Politics? What if I do the start of Cli... more >>

Comments: Got on this climb yesterday. Wow. This was way better than I had been told it was. John's description is right on. This thing stays on you. It felt pretty bouldery to me and as hard as any twelve I have been on this year. I might have been having a high gravity day or perhaps it is a bit reachy as this felt nothing like 5.11 as others have suggested. Either way it was fun and I look forward to getting back on it.

Comments: I used self drives and I read what the ASCA wrote about them. I paraphrase, they only had a shear of 3000 which didn't seem that good considering the effort it took to put them in. That seems pretty good to me. I am not recommending their use just was surprised they thought it was not very good. Can't remember what a modern 3/8ths is. Anyway, it would be worth asking Ray if he used drop ins of self drills. For future reference mine were used in the early 80s. When I get done with my other ma... more >>

Comments: Hey Alex, Thanks for the upgrade. These bolts needed to be replaced. Your term "shockingly horrible" is interesting. Were the short bolts rusted away or just short? Those short bolts have held tons of falls over the years. You may not be aware that they were screwed into sleeves known as drop ins or self drives that are much longer than the bolts. I used to put self drives in with grade eight bolts which are super strong. If the part below the rock was placed properly they are bomber as w... more >>

Comments: Sounds like some gym tape might be needed! Maybe they can adjust the bolts to force the issue. It can't always be done without ruining the natural flow and making people feel manipulated. This is the problem with climbing real rock, sometimes a nearby weakness makes it impossible to maintain a more sustained climb.

Comments: That's interesting Eric. While looking at the photos I wondered if people were just avoiding what looked like a short move to the right or if it was a depth of field thing. Not sure if that is what you did but that was my thought.

It is easy at times when setting up routes to force a line up a section of rock. This is especially true if it is a cool feature.

Comments: Nah, not cranky about that. Just sayin' it is hard to rate stuff when you work a route and it feels or is rated harder than you usually climb easily and then you walk it on the redpoint. This is why I wish people would take a little time and post up on this site how many stars they think a route deserves and and what they would rate it if it is different from what is posted.

Comments: The first pitch has about 30 feet of cool climbing. The section where SA suggests moving left to a fixed pin is trivial and contrived and adds little to the experience. Looking forward to doing the second pitch.
