Climbing limited to areas below observation deck.
As per 7/13/11 email reply from A.N.F. Support Service and Recreation Teams, the restrictions on climbing/rappelling are limited to areas below the observation deck, to prevent interaction between rope gear and man-made structures or guests of the observation deck.
The restrictions due to timbering were evidently just a failure to remove the posts from their boards afterwards.
DescriptionA good number of climbs if you search around the whole crag. No bolts due to the restrictions of the state park. Top ropes can be easily set, and leads are rather hard to protect due to the type of rock. Be sure to check the postings on the bulletin board at the trailhead for climbing/rappelling restrictions in some areas of the overlook. Tons of good bouldering also on the hillside below the crag.
Getting ThereFrom Bradford: Start by going 219 S to Custer City. Take a right at the main intersection (rt 770) and go for about 7 miles until you reach the intersection of rt 59. Stay right at the intersection and go about 8.5 miles until you see a sign for the Rim Rock overlook on your left. Turn left here and follow the road until reaching a parking lot and picnic area. Park and follow the well maintained trails to the top of the crag.
From Warren: Take route 6 S to the 59 (Kinzua rd) toward Kinzua dam. Pass the dam on your left and a large bridge crossing the reservoir. Shortly after the bridge you'll see a sign for the Rim Rock overlook on your right. Turn right and follow the road to the parking area and trailhead to the crag.
