Rattlesnake Rocks
Submitted by: Leo Paik
Description
This is a nice little area with scattered rock outcrops on the Blue Hills Reservation in Braintree not too far from Quincy Quarries. This was? under Metropolitan District Commission control and now is probably under Department of Conservation and Recreation. Its name comes from actual fauna. Climbing in this area dates back to at least the 1930s. Oddly, Ship’s Prow here can be a warm place during a cold, sunny stretch. Some of the rocks are quite small. There may be hidden crags/boulders here for exploring types.

Crags here include Burger Boulder, The Shield, Ship’s Prow, The Playground, & The Overlook.

Apparently, in the easter part of the Blue Hills Reservation area a few more hidden crags: St. Moritz Pond, Clubouse, Chicatawbut Overlook, & Lemon Squeeze.
Getting There
To get here, drive I-3/SE Expressway to exit 8, go to Wampatuck Rd, towards Chickatawbut Rd. Park on the N side of the road past Bunker Hill Quarry. Walk back E and find a dirt road on top of an embankment covering a pipeline. Faint trails break off to the right.

This is a unique area. Hidden, but there are bolts in place, so you know people have been there many times before. When I went there, it was only me and my climbing partner. Not really hard to find if you know what your looking for.

I will be attempting to add route descriptions for both Rattlesnake Rocks and Quincy Quarries this season in an attempt to flesh out the sections for each on this site. Stay tuned.
